Brief History Of The Ter-Kwande Institution

The history of the evolution of the Ter Kwande institution is a bit complicated. The first Ter-Kwande was crowned in 1932, his name was Suleagbor from Ikov Clan, Then, the whole of the area was administered in the old Gboko Division as a major ruling section. The next Ter-kwande was the brother of Suleagbor, his was called Adogo and the third Ter-Kwande was Angwe Sulegbor (the one believed by many to be first Ter-kwande).
Angwe died in 1958 and Ge Kpa from Ukan Clan took over as the fourth Ter-Kwande. He died in 1965. After him, Gom Gire from Shangev – ya Clan emerged as the fifth Ter-kwande. Gire became recognized by law in 1991 as the first Ter Kwande Local Government when the military government of the day enacted an Edict to that effect. and he died in 1993. After him HRH James I. Adzape became the sixth Ter.
Judging from the law which establishes the Benue State Second Class Chiefs which became Operational in 1991, Gom Gire was the fifth Ter-kwande in the mega kwande picture of Ushongo and kwande from 1965 through to 1991 when the law restricted him to the local government. So in that line, he was the fourth Ter big kwande but the first Ter Kwande Local Government .The first Ter- Ushongo Local Government was J.N Jogoh.. On his death, Ambrose Ioryer then took over.

HRH James Adzape is the second Ter- Kwande Local Government, but jointly shared the 6th  position in the big Kwande with late Jogoh who died some years back.
